Two different tow trucks (and presumably their drivers) were shot at 6 kilometers apart on highway 401 in Toronto. No one was injured. Police are said to be investigating whether the two shots are connected.
Peter Edwards, the Toronto Sun's organized crime beat reporter, is candid in discussing his findings that the tow truck industry is rampant with fraud, money laundering, kickbacks and otherwise organized crime dealings, many of which include corrupted police officers (3 of whom have been arrested, as of late with 4 more being investigated).
These shootings are believed to be a symptom of tow truck turf wars that are escalating in and around the city, as Toronto tow trucks claim neighborhoods, the same way drug dealers or pimps are known to claim neighborhoods or street corners. It's reported that the tow truck drivers are just one cog in a larger tire of crime, this tire including impound lots, body shops, physio clinics and more.
Once the Toronto tow truck drivers drop the cars and trucks off at the body shops, that's where things can spiral out of control. The vehicle at that point technically belongs to that body shop and will not be released until the car insurance pays the often inflated repair bill. Because the body shop is frauding the car insurance, they can afford to give the Toronto tow truck drivers big kickbacks, but the downside is that it's making our Toronto car insurance go way up!
Many are calling for regulation to be instituted to help clean up this cycle, as tempers and violence are getting out of control. The Canadian tow truck industry is notoriously unregulated, allowing anyone to get into the game.
